Please join the District of Columbia LGBTQ+ Bar Association and Eversheds Sutherland (US) LLP for a special CLE on the on the immigration relief options available to LGBTQ Immigrants in the United States. In addition to learning more about the current legal landscape surrounding this important topic, attendees will also be provided with opportunities to get involved in local pro bono efforts impacting the LGBTQ+ community.

Daniela Huerta Garcia, Managing Attorney for the DC Volunteer Lawyers Project’s Immigration Practice

Description

During this CLE, we will discuss:

  • The unique challenges that LGBTQ+ immigrants face when navigating the immigration landscape in the United States,
  • Humanitarian immigration relief options available to LGBTQ+ immigrants, including discussions of T-visas, U-visas, VAWA, and asylum), and
  • How to get involved locally in pro bono efforts to protection LGBTQ immigrants.

Learning Objectives

Attendees will leave this CLE with:

  • An understanding of the current challenges particular to LGBTQ-identified immigrants living in the U.S.
  • A framework to identify potential humanitarian relief options for LGBTQ-identified immigrants living in the U.S.
  • Connections to pro bono organizations where individuals can learn more and get involved in pro bono representation of LGBTQ-identified immigrants needing legal assistance to get involved locally in pro bono efforts to protection LGBTQ immigrants.

Daniela C. Huerta Garcia, Esq.

Managing Attorney, Immigration Program | DC Volunteer Lawyers Project

Daniela is the Managing Attorney for the Immigration Program of the DC Volunteer Lawyers Project, a local non-profit focusing on serving domestic violence survivors, children-at risk, and immigrants in the DC area. She joined DCVLP in 2022. Daniela was previously an antitrust associate in the Washington, DC office of White & Case LLP. While at White & Case, Daniela maintained an active pro bono practice, including counseling clients regarding asylum matters, drafting comments in opposition to Title 42, and helping secure the release of a Guantanamo detainee.

During law school, Daniela led and participated in various immigration clinics and worked at an immigration law firm, focusing on asylum and other forms of relief. Before starting her legal career, Daniela worked as a field representative for a Member of Congress, focusing on community building and advocating for constituents.

Daniela earned her J.D. from University of California, Berkeley School of Law and two B.A.s from The University of Texas at Dallas. She is licensed to practice law in the District of Columbia. Daniela is a native Spanish speaker.
